Pulau Besar

The History of Pulau Besar
Pulau Besar is an island nation.  It is made up of two islands.  The main island is slightly less than 100 square miles.  The other island sits offshore just to the southwest and is quite small.  Pulau Besar is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean at 20 degrees north longitude 20 degrees west latitude.  Its closest neighbors are the Marshall Islands.  The population of Pulau Besar is 12,753.  The main crop is rice.  Tropical fruits are also grown, mainly mangos.  Due to the importance of tourism, English is the official language today as most visitors to the island come from Australia or New Zeland .  The main industries today are tourism and farming.  The President of this small democracy is Pak Subagio and the Vice President is Ibu Kamini.  Pulau Besar has been a member of the United Nations since 1973.  Pulau Besar celebrates its independence day on February 17th.   Pulau Besar was discovered in1832 by sailor named Pak Brawijaya when his ship went off course during a storm.  Today there are many statues and monuments dedicated to Pak Brawijaya.

My island

Pulau Besar
During the last three weeks, we had to make an island.  We had to put a compass, scale, legend, the longitude and latitude, and a population on the map of the island. My scale is 1 inch=20 miles.  My population is 12,753. That is just the people that live on the island.  There are several hundred tourists that come and go every day. My latitude is 10 degrees and the longitude 0 degrees longitude.  Here are some of the things on my legend:  a box with 3 green lines through it is a rice paddy, a star shows the capital Sanapoter, dots are towns, and stick people are schools.  In my island in the north east are mountains, rivers, and a lake.  My island is known for its tasty mango that grow on are exotic trees and for our fine rice paddies these are Pulau Besar two main exports. In this island there is a great schooling system.  In all schools the main language is English and there are five main subjects Math , Science, English, world studies and electives which you can choose two classes like art and music . In Pulau Besar our president is Pak Subagio.  We elect a new president every six years.   The next election will be held in 2013.  Pulau Besar was discovered when Pak Brawijaya's ship got cut off course because of a storm on February 17th, 1832 and landed Pulau Besar.  Today February 17th is independence day.  Now you know a little about Pulau Besar.
