The History of Pulau Besar
Pulau Besar is an island nation. It is made up of two islands. The main island is slightly less than 100 square miles. The other island sits offshore just to the southwest and is quite small. Pulau Besar is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean at 20 degrees north longitude 20 degrees west latitude. Its closest neighbors are the Marshall Islands. The population of Pulau Besar is 12,753. The main crop is rice. Tropical fruits are also grown, mainly mangos. Due to the importance of tourism, English is the official language today as most visitors to the island come from Australia or New Zeland . The main industries today are tourism and farming. The President of this small democracy is Pak Subagio and the Vice President is Ibu Kamini. Pulau Besar has been a member of the United Nations since 1973. Pulau Besar celebrates its independence day on February 17th. Pulau Besar was discovered in1832 by sailor named Pak Brawijaya when his ship went off course during a storm. Today there are many statues and monuments dedicated to Pak Brawijaya.
